Nutrition in the summer months

The summer months in our country, Greece, we know are very hot and sunny, so let us rejoice carefree and the fun of summer and the beach, nevertheless they should not overwhelm us so much that we forget to take care of our body and diet !

Let's look at some tips we can follow in the summer to keep a body cool and dynamic!

  • Stay hydrated. Drink 8-12 glasses of water a day, especially during exercise, to avoid dehydration caused by muscle cramps, electrolyte imbalances, and dry skin. On the beach, because the body sweats are intense, we must somehow hydrate our body. Water should be our main choice. If we choose coffee and tea, it would be better not to contain sugar and if we choose soft drinks, it is good to prefer light.
  • Take care of the good preservation of the food. Food safety is key during the hot summer months, so it is good to keep our food in the refrigerator, or in cool places so that it does not deteriorate.
  • Consume seasonal fruits and vegetables. It is the best time to put all the colors of the iris in our salad!
  • Always have snacks in our bag for the beach. The temptations from outside are many, and these club sandwiches from the cafeteria can give us a lot of unnecessary calories if we are not careful! That's why it's a good idea to have a snack that combines protein, carbohydrate and fat, such as cheese and crackers, cottage cheese and fruit, hummus and vegetables, a homemade mix of dried fruits, nuts and your favorite whole grains.
  • Take advantage of the good weather to do physical activity in open spaces: walks in parks and groves, gardening, swimming in the sea, rackets on the beach, the opportunities are plentiful!
  • Do not overdo it with alcohol: the atmosphere in the summer bars is extraordinary, so let us make sure to enjoy the fun with our loved ones, without over-consuming alcohol. Moderate alcohol consumption is when alcohol intake does not exceed 2 servings for a man and 1 serving for a woman a day.
