Why choose seasonal fruits and vegetables?

  • They are fresher and tastier than those grown out of season.
  • They are full of nutrients. Nature has made sure to cover us fully in vitamins and trace elements that we need all year round through vegetables and fruits according to season. It is no coincidence that winter provides all citrus fruits that are rich in vitamin C, which is very important for the prevention of infections/viruses.
  • They are cheaper, because they do not need special cultivation conditions.
  • It is a way to support local farmers and domestic products.
  • You help reduce CO2 emissions (food ecological footprint) required to grow and transport out-of season food.
  • When fruits and vegetables come from other countries, they are likely to contain more pesticides as in many countries the regulation regarding pesticides, herbicides and fungicides is more flexible and relaxed.

How do we distinguish seasonal products?

It's a fairly easy process. First, read the label regarding country of origin. Then pay attention to how prices move. Also, use your sense of touch; avoid foods preserved in wax to extend their shelf life. Choose fruits that are juicier. Use your sense of smell in choosing your fruits or vegetables; those that have a stronger aroma are within the growing season. Finally, fruits and vegetables cannot be perfect in appearance.
