Burnout syndrome

Burnout is a syndrome of physical and mental exhaustion, in which a person is overwhelmed by feelings of stress and loss of interest and any positive emotions. The person is not satisfied with their work, forms a negative image of himself and is unable to deal with problems that arise.

 

Characteristics of burnout

Emotional exhaustion: Constant feeling of mental and physical fatigue, loss of energy and mood changes

Depersonalization: Alienation, establishment of impersonal, aggressive and cynical relationships

Lack of personal achievement: A feeling of incompetence that leads to a decrease in efficiency

Stages of burnout

Excitement/ Frustration (lots of expectations and demands)

Doubt / Inactivity (doubts whether work meets expectations)

Exhaustion/ Abortion (considering all effort futile)

Apathy/Cynicism (remaining at work disregarding further development)

 

Symptoms of burnout

On a physiological level: headaches, hypertension, sleep and eating disorders, gastrointestinal disorders

On an emotional level: feelings of inadequacy, reduced self-confidence, guilt, mood disorders, irritability, alienation

At a behavioral level: reduced performance, conflicts, inability to concentrate, social withdrawal, repeated absences

 

What contributes to burnout?

In a work environment where there is a lack of recognition, monotonous work, taking on many responsibilities, non-compliance with the schedule, pressure from superiors and lack of organization, it is easy to develop burnout syndrome. However, even if the working conditions are ideal, some personal characteristics may also lead to burnout. For example, people who are perfectionists, unsocial, pessimistic or who want to control everything, are more vulnerable to developing the syndrome.

Create realistic goals, avoid competitiveness, increase rest and sleep, take rest breaks, set boundaries, create a support network inside and outside of work, eat healthily and exercise.
