What is Body-Shaming?

“Body-shaming”, a term that is constantly heard in the media, but many do not know its exact meaning. It refers to the shame that people feel about their body, due to the negative criticism they receive from their wider social circle. Commentary can be about a person's size, age, hair, clothing, food, or level of attractiveness.

Body-shaming can lead to various difficulties which seem to be associated with low self-esteem.

Avoid becoming part of this “movement’’

Body-shaming can be non-stop. While we cannot control the actions of others, we can control the way we contribute to the culture of physical shame. Not being a part of it is a sign of respect for other people but also self-respect. The intention of not getting involved in different types of body-shaming can lead to improved mental wellbeing.

By holding this position, we give room to difference. This means encouraging the acceptance and appreciation of shape and diversity in appearance, focusing on health instead of size or weight, and appreciating the human body for all that it is and does.

Therefore, we do not need to talk about other people's bodies. You do not have to accept, participate in or tolerate such words or actions. You would not want them to do that to you and now you know that it can cause real problems for those who receive such comments.

It is important to grow with other people and to deepen respect, care and compassion for yourself and others.

Learn more about body neutrality.

Body neutrality is an approach that has many proven benefits for mental health. It is the concept of accepting bodies as they are, without judging them. This can apply to your own body and to the bodies of others. Body neutrality encourages the focus on the positive functions that bodies can perform. Learning about this can make you feel better about your body, improve your relationship with food, and boost your self-esteem.

So, do you need to change the way you talk about your own body?

In a culture where so much emphasis is placed on what is wrong with us and needs improvement, it can be a huge challenge to speak positively about our bodies.

By speaking positively about ourselves and our bodies and observing qualities about ourselves and others that we like and appreciate, we can enhance our care, compassion, and connection to others and to ourselves.

Body positivity starts with you. Just keep on doing it and keep reminding yourself that you are not just a body and say no to body-shaming.
